Private physio vs NHS physio - waiting times
Are physiotherapy NHS waiting times in Edinburgh too long for you? If so, there’s good news – we’re here to help. Edinburgh Sports Injury Clinic provides musculoskeletal and physiotherapy appointments usually within the same week, including early morning and evening slots, so most patients are offered an appointment in 3 days. Even better, you can refer yourself directly.
Recent figures (updated to 28 February 2026) from Public Health Scotland indicate that around 1 in 10 people in Scotland are currently on an NHS waiting list. Earlier data on musculoskeletal (MSK) services shows that only 39% of patients are seen within four weeks, while approximately 6.9% wait longer than 24 weeks. We believe that’s far too long to wait. So skip the wait, book now!
How to avoid NHS waiting lists
Choosing private physiotherapy means you don’t have to wait for treatment. Another advantage is flexibility – many hospitals and outpatient clinics operate only Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm, often requiring time off work.
At our clinic, you benefit from:
• Appointments that fit around your schedule
• Access to modern treatment techniques
• Ongoing care from the same therapist
• A convenient Edinburgh location
The risks of waiting too long
Delaying treatment can slow recovery and, in some cases, allow conditions to worsen. Early intervention often prevents minor issues from developing into more serious problems, reduces the need for long-term care, and leads to faster symptom relief and better outcomes overall.
Patient review on booking times and more…
“I would just like to thank all the staff at Edinburgh Sports Injury Clinic for looking after me with regards to an injury to my shoulder and back. I was in a great deal of pain and the staff at ESIC managed to book me in to see a Physiotherapist the same day: Amazing!
Christina, my Physiotherapist who is treating me is very professional but also friendly and most of all excellent at her job. I am glad to say my back is all good and my shoulder injury is healing well thanks to Christina.
If you have an injury that needs sorted out, I recommend you get in touch with ESIC staff and they will look after you.” K. McKinlay, Patient, April 2026
We can help manage a variety of musculoskeletal issues and health conditions. Most often these relate to problems with bones, nerves, joints, muscles, ligaments and soft tissue. A few examples of these include:
• Back and neck pain
• Joint related pain
• Sports injuries
• Injury resulting from accidents
• Muscle and tendon related or injury
• Pre and post operative rehabilitation
• Core rehabilitation
• Anti-natal and post-natal care
• Incontinence
Your therapist will start by conducting a comprehensive assessment and physical examination to identify the cause and nature of your condition. Following this, they will review the findings alongside your medical history and personal goals to determine the most appropriate treatment approach. A personalised treatment plan will then be developed. Hands on treatment may commence during the first session.
If you are self-referring and paying for your treatment independently, there is no need to see your GP beforehand. It is not necessary to tell your GP before seeing us. Physiotherapists are primary healthcare practitioners, so we are clinically trained, although it can be helpful for us to have access to any test results that you think may be relevant.
However, if you have already been in touch with your GP and undergone tests it would be really useful for you to bring any relevant x-rays, scans or results in with you alongside a list of any medications you are currently taking.
We do not work directly with any Insurance Companies, however, we provide receipts which can be forwarded to them to reclaim any monies spent. Please contact your Insurance Company to check if this is acceptable to them.

At Edinburgh Sports Injury Clinic, we’re here to help you recover, rebuild, and return to peak health – with confidence. No matter your age, your level of movement – we provide expert physio for all to help with everyday movement.
June Lumsden, one of the first medical practitioners in Scotland to earn an MSc in Sports Injuries, founded the Edinburgh Sports Injuries Clinic (ESIC) in 2003. Her extensive experience with international athletes taught her that a holistic approach not only treats injuries but often improves performance.
This philosophy became the cornerstone of ESIC.
Over the years, the clinic expanded its services beyond athletes to treat individuals from all walks of life and in 2013 we built a dedicated treatment facility. Keeping pace with the latest research, we recognised the need to improve core and pelvic floor rehabilitation. To address this, we invested in a Real-Time Ultrasound scanner. This state-of-the-art tool eliminates the guesswork from these exercises, which can look identical even when different muscles are engaged. It has become an essential part of our rehabilitation process, helping patients with back pain, sacroiliac instability, and pelvic floor issues like incontinence following childbirth or prostate surgery.
Our highly qualified team are committed to continuous learning, always striving to provide the best possible care. We value every patient and are dedicated to offering exceptional treatment from the moment you walk through our doors.
