Rehabilitation of the Kinetic Chain
Following injury, it is important that the kinetic chain is analysed and corrected if needed. This not only improves performance, it reduces the risk of further injury.
This is done in a number of ways:
- Assessment: the kinetic chain is analysed to identify weak or inefficiencies in movement patterns.
- Holistic approach: the rehabilitation programme should work on the whole chain and not just isolated segments.
- Flexibility: Stretching and mobility exercises are identified and used to address any restrictions within the chain.
- Core training: the core is central in most kinetic chains. A weak or poorly timed core will disrupt the kinetic chain, reducing strength, power and consistency of action. Using a Real Time Ultrasound (RTUS) is recommended when assessing and correcting core function.
- Proprioception training: exercises are introduced to improve body awareness and control throughout the chain.
- Functional exercises: these mimic the actions seen in sport allowing changes and improvements to be integrated into the sports specific action.
- Progressive loading: exercises are gradually progressed to challenge the kinetic chain and promote adaptation.
