Sports Massage
Sports massage focuses on improving performance, preventing injuries, and aiding recovery from competition or training. It can be used before and after exercises to prepare or reduce post exercises soreness. The massage techniques are selected appropriately for each purpose and tailored to the individual needs of the sportsperson, their stage of training or competition cycle, and any areas of injury or concern.
Techniques include:
Myofascial Release: A gentle sustained pressure applied to the connective tissue surrounding the muscle, which helps to reduce tension and restore muscle elasticity, thus improving range of movement and flexibility.
Effective for:
- Iliotibila band syndrome
- Plantar fasciitis
- Neck and back pain
Stretching techniques: A combination of static and dynamic stretching can be used, along with techniques such as proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation ( PNF). These techniques can be used to increase flexibility and range of motion, prepare the body for performance or reduce stiffness post exercise.
Effective for:
- Hamstring strains
- Shoulder mobility issues
- Calf tightness
Deep Tissue Massage: This involves slow deep strokes that target the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is particularly effective for relieving chronic muscle tension, reducing knots or adhesions and promoting recovery from injuries and intense training.
Effective for:
- Rotator cuff injuries
- Chronic low back pain
- Shin splints
Trigger point therapy: With this technique the therapist applies pressure to specific points to release muscle tightness.
Effective for:
- Piriformis syndrome
- Tension headaches in athletes
