Urinary Incontinence in Men

Urinary incontinence also becomes more common in men as they age, affecting an estimated 3% to 11% of adult men. While this percentage is significantly lower than in women, this still represents a significant number of men experiencing symptoms that can impact their daily lives.

Several factors contribute to the development of urinary incontinence in aging men. The two that physiotherapy can help with include:

  • Prostate Changes: As men age, the prostate gland frequently enlarges, with prostatectomies being common.
  • Weak Core and Pelvic Floor Muscles: Similar to women, weak pelvic floor muscles in men can contribute to various types of incontinence.

It’s crucial to understand that for men, just like for women, urinary incontinence is not an inevitable consequence of aging. Instead, it can be a treatable condition. Finding the root cause is key, as it allows for targeted treatment and the best possible results.

At ESIC, our Real-Time Ultrasound (RTUS) scanner plays a vital role in this process. It helps us accurately diagnose whether your pelvic floor is weak or overactive, enabling us to specifically retrain these muscles and help you regain continence.
