Stress Awareness Month: How physiotherapy can support mental health and wellbeing

April marks Stress Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding of stress and encouraging people to explore practical ways to manage it. In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become a common part of daily life – but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored. In fact, long-term stress can have a significant impact on both physical and mental health, contributing to issues such as anxiety, poor sleep, and persistent pain.

One of the key aims of Stress Awareness Month is to highlight simple, effective strategies that individuals can use to support their wellbeing. While techniques like mindfulness and talking therapies are often discussed, one powerful and sometimes overlooked approach is physiotherapy.

Understanding the link between stress and the body
Stress is not just something we feel mentally – it has real, physical effects on the body. When we experience stress, our bodies enter a “fight or flight” response. While this can be helpful in short bursts, prolonged stress can lead to muscle tension, fatigue, headaches, and chronic pain.

Physiotherapy recognises this strong connection between mind and body. Modern physiotherapy considers not just physical symptoms, but also emotional and psychological factors that may be contributing to a person’s condition.

What research has found?
Workplace stress is reaching record levels, affecting employees worldwide. According to stress.org.uk  around 1 in 4 workers report feeling unable to cope with stress at work. Nearly 91% of employees have faced high stress or workplace pressure in the past year. Signs of burnout, including exhaustion and disengagement, are increasing, now impacting more than half of the workforce. Work-related stress, depression, and anxiety contribute to significant lost productivity and days off, highlighting the urgent need for supportive workplace initiatives. Stress Awareness Month gives organisations and individuals a chance to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and actively support employee wellbeing before issues escalate.

How physiotherapy helps manage stress
Physiotherapy offers a range of practical tools that can help reduce stress and improve overall wellbeing:
1. Movement and Exercise
Exercise is a cornerstone of physiotherapy and one of the most effective ways to manage stress. Physical activity encourages the release of endorphins and serotonin – chemicals that boost mood and promote relaxation. Regular movement can also improve sleep, increase energy levels, and provide a healthy outlet for stress.
2. Reducing Physical Tension
Stress often manifests as tight shoulders, neck pain, or back discomfort. Physiotherapists use techniques such as manual therapy and stretching to relieve this tension, helping to break the cycle where stress causes pain and pain increases stress.
3. Breathing and Relaxation Techniques
We can support with breathing exercises and relaxation strategies that help calm the nervous system. These techniques can shift the body from a heightened stress state into a more relaxed, restorative mode.
4. Encouraging Outdoor and “Green” Activity
Physiotherapy often promotes activity in natural environments. Research suggests that exercising outdoors can lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and enhance mood even more than indoor activity.
5. Building Confidence and Control
Stress can often stem from feeling overwhelmed or out of control. Physiotherapy empowers individuals with personalised plans and achievable goals, helping them regain confidence in their bodies and daily routines.

A holistic approach to wellbeing
What makes physiotherapy particularly valuable during Stress Awareness Month is its holistic nature. It doesn’t just treat symptoms – we equip patients with long-term strategies to manage stress independently. By combining movement, education, and practical coping techniques, physiotherapy supports both physical and mental health in a sustainable way.

Final thoughts
Stress is a normal part of life, but it shouldn’t be something we simply accept without support. Stress Awareness Month is an opportunity to explore different ways of caring for our wellbeing – and physiotherapy offers a practical, accessible, and evidence-based option.
Whether it’s through guided exercise, relaxation techniques, or addressing physical tension, physiotherapy can play a key role in helping individuals feel calmer, stronger, and more in control of their health.

For over 30 years, Stress Awareness Month has had a different theme each year which reflects societal challenges. For Stress Awareness Month 2026, the theme is #BeTheChange ‘to help individuals and organisations recognise and reduce stress, fostering a happier, healthier, and more resilient world’. The theme ‘Be the Change’ is inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s famous quote, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. At ESIC, we’re here to help.
