How Flat Feet Affect Performance in Racquet Sports

While often asymptomatic, meaning they do not cause persistent pain, flat feet (or pes planus) can have a significant effect on the performance, longevity, and injury risk of athletes in demanding sports like tennis, squash, and badminton.
Racquet sports require an aggressive combination of explosive power, sudden directional changes, and precise balance – all of which begin at the feet.

1. Reduced Stability, Balance, and Footwork
Racquet sports involve frequent lateral (side-to-side) shuffles, lunges, and rapid pivots, all demanding an exceptionally stable base.

  • Overpronation: With flat feet, the natural arch collapses, causing the foot to roll excessively inward (overpronation). This rotation destabilises the lower leg, particularly when the athlete attempts to plant or pivot forcefully.
  • Compromised Hitting Base: During key actions, such as hitting an open-stance forehand or lunging for a drop shot, the body must generate force off a stable base. Overpronation shifts the body’s centre of gravity, leading to slight, inconsistent losses of balance.
  • Slowed Recovery: Instability results in inconsistent and inefficient footwork. This means the athlete spends slightly more time correcting their balance after a shot, leading to a lower recovery speed back to the T-position.

2. Decreased Agility and Explosiveness
The foot’s arch is crucial for converting ground contact into explosive forward or lateral movement.

  • Inefficient Shock Absorption: The arch functions like a spring or a natural shock absorber. Without a rigid arch, the foot is less efficient at absorbing and redirecting impact forces.
  • Loss of the Rigid Lever: The key biomechanical issue is the failure to create a rigid lever at the moment of push-off. When the arch collapses, the foot remains too flexible, resulting in a “leak” of explosive power that should be used to launch the body.
  • Longer Ground Contact Time: The less efficient push-off means the foot spends more time in contact with the ground. This reduces the ‘spring’ required for a quick first step, making it harder to chase down wide shots or accelerate rapidly from a standstill.

3. Compromised Shot Quality and Consistency
All groundstrokes rely on transferring energy efficiently from the ground up to the racket.

  • Inconsistent Timing: Instability at the base introduces micro-movements throughout the body. This makes it challenging to maintain the precise timing needed to strike the ball or shuttlecock in the optimal position, leading to an inconsistent strike and reduced accuracy.
  • Balance During Power Shots: It becomes particularly difficult to stay balanced while generating maximum power, such as during heavy topspin shots or deep lunges. The lack of a stable base can force compensations in the hips or core, resulting in reduced shot power and poor direction.

4. Increased Fatigue and Endurance Issues
The arch’s shock-absorbing role is crucial for endurance throughout a match.

  • Muscular Overload: Without the passive support of a healthy arch, the muscles in the feet, calves, and lower legs must work overtime to actively stabilise the body and control pronation.
  • Premature Fatigue: This muscular overload results in fatigue building up significantly faster. This loss of endurance is particularly noticeable in longer rallies or multi-set matches, where compromised form often leads to a rapid decline in performance and increased susceptibility to errors late in the game.

5. Higher Risk of Injury (The Kinetic Chain)
The misaligned foundation caused by flat feet can translate into poor mechanics and chronic injury risks throughout the entire lower body and back:

  • Ankles and Feet: Overpronation stresses the ligaments and tendons that struggle to support the arch. This increases the risk of Achilles or posterior tibial tendinopathies and ankle sprains during pivots.
  • Knees: The inward rolling of the foot causes the lower leg (tibia) to rotate internally, which can place undue strain on the knee joint and lead to conditions like patellofemoral pain (runner’s knee) or tendonitis.
  • Hips and Back: Poor shock absorption and misalignment at the feet travel up the body, forcing the hips and lower back to compensate. Over time, this can lead to chronic tightness, inflammation, and lower back pain, especially in rotation-heavy sports.
